Exposition Writing

This week in literacy, we have been writing expositions. Expositions are the same as an argument or a piece of opinion writing. We had to pick our topic for our arguments and the topic I chose was why we should have free range chickens. This is my exposition writing~

Having Cage Free Chickens

Do you like having eggs on a Sunday morning for a nice big breakfast? Well if you do, you should probably consider thinking about buying a different type of eggs if you haven’t already. I think we should have cage free chickens instead of caged chickens.

So, what is the difference between cage free and caged chickens? Well, caged chickens are being forced to lay their eggs in very uncomfortable positions, where as cage free or free range chickens are still in cages/coops but the coops are bigger and the chickens are more comfortable because they have more space to move around.

The caged chickens lives are affected by being in cages because the cages are so small that the poor hens can barely turn around. The cages are called battery cages and the average size of the cages are 67 square inches, which is less space than a letter-sized piece of paper for these abused animals to live in for their lives. The cage free chickens however can run around and spread their wings, making this a much better environment for them.

Free Range chicken eggs also taste better, you can tell this by the color of the yolk. The free range eggs have a more orange-colored yolk compared to the caged eggs, which have a more yellow-colored yolk. Research shows us that the orange yolks have a higher vitamin rate. The vitamins in these eggs are vitamin A, D and B12; vitamin A is necessary to help your immune and eye health. Vitamin D helps bone mineralization, and B12 helps form Red Blood cells.

In conclusion, I definitely believe that free range chickens should overpopulate caged chickens to make their lives better by giving them more space. So next time you are about to buy eggs, think twice about which types you do get.

NZDA

On the Queen's birthday weekend, I went to the NZDA Competition. NZDA stands for New Zealand Dance Awards. NZDA was held in Christchurch from Thursday 29th of May to Monday 3rd of June. I had dances nearly every day apart from Saturday and Thursday. I got a lot of Silver Awards and placed in my duos with Jemma. On Saturday we went around the Hornby Mall all day, while our parents watched the Rocketman movie. I had a fantastic time and I can't wait to go again next year, where I aim to improve my scores.

Creative Writing

This is my first BlogX post on Creative Writing. It is about World War 2 and Whales.

The War Whale

Her body and large barnacle-covered fins overshadow me as she
carries me easily over the blue skies. She picked me up in the middle of
the Pacific ocean, in the middle of a blood-spilling war. My plane was
shot near the engine by the Germans and I plunged into the cold blue
waters. My life half flashed before my eyes in seconds, like they say
when you’re about to die. I took in my last breath as my plane sank to
the dark depths and then she swam past me, picked my plane up and
flew out of the oceans, out into the smoke-filled air. She flew me South,
South towards safety. Up in the cotton candy-like clouds, soaring. When
will she drop me off? I wouldn’t know, or whether she will drop me off.

We fly for about 2 hours until I come to a sight I wished I would never
see again, the war. I suddenly flood like a tsunami with panic when
I realise that the Germans could shoot her and myself down into the
water. I am frightened to my bones when this thought races in. What
makes it even worse that, she doesn’t even seem to know or possibly
care, she just keeps on flying. The a bullet shoots towards us like a
rocket flying at the speed of sound, but instead of it piercing her hard in
the stomach, it just bounces right off her. This happens to every attempt
that is fired at us. We simply pass through and then we are back in
peace.

Around 4 hours of exciting flying, she nose dives to beach of an island
and drops me off there. She sort of smiles at me and I smile in thanks.
After she glides back into the glimmering water I say to myself, she
saved my life, that whale did, and I hope one day I can return the favour.
