Myth Writing

Last week we had to pick a natural phenomenon to write about. We had to write a myth about why it happens. My natural phenomenon that I chose to do was about Why we have lightning. This is completely made up and probably isn't that accurate with the Greek gods and all, but I hope you like reading it!

Why we have lightning

This is the story of why have lightning. Once, thousands of years ago
in the high, peaceful peaks of Mount Olympus in Greece, Zeus and his
wife Hera were living happily. The sun was always out to represent the
happiness of Zeus and Hera’s love. Everyone was friends with each
other, even the gods with the people of Greece. One day however, the
Greek people put a stop in this happiness, the people, thinking that
because Zeus and Hera’s lives were full of happiness, that their lives
should be too. They wanted more food and water and because of this,
some of the more rich men and women of Greece marched up Mount
Olympus, in a demanding rage.

They pushed past the guards (who of course were not expecting
something like this to happen on what was a normal day) and stomped
up the steps to Zeus and Hera’s thrones chanting as they went “WE
WANT MORE! WE WANT MORE!”. At first, Zeus was extremely
angry and told them to get out. The people were shoved out and just as
they got to the doorway, an elderly man stood and said, “Please Zeus,
at least let me tell you what we came here for.” Zeus was a humble god
and let the man speak. The man told him about how they thought that
they needed more happiness in their lives.Zeus considered this and
said, “I will give you more food and water, if you do not come back
here again. You need to be more grateful.” The people shouted thank
-you’s all the way down the mountain and when they went back to
their homes, they found Zeus’s promise of food and water on their
tables.

Greece was once again happy, until a greedy man and his four other
friends went back to the temple about a year later and told Zeus to give
them more. Zeus, who spoke in a serious tone said, "Do you not
remember a year ago, you came to me and I gave you what you wanted
in return if you didn’t come back here again?” The greedy men played
dumb and told Zeus that they hadn’t been there, even when they had.
Zeus knew this and because of it, he cast a burst of lighting at the
greedy men, who flew down Mount Olympus and into Greece.
The people of Greece knew these greedy men and knew they were
lying when they said Zeus had just “randomly attacked them”.
Not learning their lesson, the men went back up to Mount Olympus
and tried yet again. This time when they asked, they didn’t even make
it halfway through their sentences, before Zeus shouted and threw
another lightning bolt at them. But this time it was much bigger and
scarier. It sent the men flying to the other side of the world, with big
Columbus clouds tailing close behind them. Torrential rain bucketed
down all over Greece and the whole world for five days, representing
the five snobby and ungrateful men. Thunder boomed and more
lightning bolts came through out the five days. The men were now
extremely scared of Zeus and fearing that he would punish them even
more, they set of to do kind things for the rest of their lives.
Now, when lighting flashes in the sky, the Greeks still think that Zeus
is angry because of someone being ungrateful to something or
someone, like the five men were to him.

Pink Shirt Day 2019

Last week on Friday, Grey Main School celebrated Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day is a day when we celebrate kindness and anti-bullying. Some of the other school ambassadors and I made heart shaped gingerbread biscuits, decorated with pink icing and sprinkles. We sold the small biscuits for 50 cents each and the bigger biscuits for $1 each. We sold all of the biscuits we made and we raised $384 all together. The money went towards the Mental Health Foundation.

Kids Lit Quiz

On the 14th of May 2019, I went down to Saint Patrick's with some other Grey Main students to compete in the yearly Kids Lit Quiz competition. The Kids Lit Quiz is a literature competition where there are questions on books from the last 200 years. There are ten categories, each with ten questions. Our school put three teams of four in the competition, with three reserves, one for each team. I was in a team with Reagan, Billie-Jean and Emily. We were Grey Main Green Team. We put our Joker (a joker is when you put double points on a category) the category Princesses. In the end all of the Grey Main teams had won at least one category, so we all had $5 because if you win a category you get money! Here is the final outcome overall:

1st: Paroa Bronze Team-79 points out of 100.
2nd: Grey Main Turquoise-77 points out of 100.
3rd: Grey Main Green-73 points out of 100.

If you came 1st you got $1000 to go towards flights for the finals. If you came second you got $20 and if you came third (my team) you got $10.  Since Paroa won, they will be going to the New Zealand Finals and if they win that, they go to the WORLD finals representing New Zealand.

Hanmer Camp 2019

Totara 1 and 2 went to Hanmer Springs for our camp, so I made a slide about my fantastic time there!

How long can Simon’s chair run for before its batteries need recharging?

On the first day of school, Simon’s electric chair stopped in the middle of main road (on a pedestrian crossing).

Nelita’s answer to the question “How do you know you are old?” is “When your candles cost more than your cake.”

What is the effect on the class of Simon saying that he won’t get to old age?
The class’s reaction to Simon’s answer about not getting to old age makes them absolutely silent, and no-one knew what to say.

Summary of Chapter One:

The first chapter of See Ya Simon is about when Simon scored a great goal at the school. We also met Simon’s friends and classmates. We learned that Simon is in a wheelchair and isn’t going to live to an old age.

Chapter Four
What is the name  of the role playing game Simon and his friends were playing? The role playing game Simon and his friends were playing was called The Lair Of The White Wolf.

What did Nathan say he looked like in photos? Nathan says that when he has his photo taken he looks like one of those identikit pictures on Crimewatch TV Programme.

Why did Mrs Shaw think Simon had trouble walking when he was little? Mrs Shaw thought that Simon had trouble walking when he was little because before she knew she was having Simon, she was a smoker.  She also thought that electric pylons had somehow affected Simon’s nervous system.

How did Simon feel about his parents looking after him all the time? Simon felt like when is parents took care of him, that his parents were not living their own lives and instead just his.

How would you feel if you were Simon? Why?  If I was Simon then I would feel imprisoned not just because I was in a wheelchair but because my parents stayed with me on hand and foot trying to take care of me.

How often do Simon’s parents go out?  Simon’s parents go out every 2 weeks on a Thursday.

Summary of Chapter Four:

In chapter four of See Ya Simon, we learn that that Mrs Shaw thinks that for a while she thinks it was her fault that Simon had trouble walking when he was little. We also now know that Simon’s parents never used to go out since Simon got Muscular Dystrophy, but then Mrs Mason said that if Simon’s parents didn’t go out that she would lie on the pavement kicking and screaming until they  went out again. Now Mrs Mason takes care of Simon every second Thursday. Simon also has a big routine so he can have a shower at night.

We also had to create a book cover for See Ya Simon, we could do it digitally or hand drawn and I chose to hand draw it. Here is mine:
