The Mine's Afire! Comprehension Activity #3

Today we read another piece of The Mine's Afire! book. We read about how all of the rescuers went in and out of the mine to rescue their friends and family. When we read it again, Tommy will probably preform in the band for the big funeral in honour of all of the bodies. We had another comprehension activity to do, here is mine:

As one of the activities we had to do a little bit of research on one of the birds Tommy saw on the bush walk he was on with his class. Here is mine:

"The Mine's Afire!" Reading Comprehension Activity

This week we started reading "The Mine's Afire!" By  Thelma Eakin and Susan Battye. We did a comprehension activity to go with it, things like describing the setting of the story, difficult things for people in the story, what my life compares to Tommy's life (he is a character in the book) and what modern conveniences I would miss if I lived in 1896. Here are my thoughts:

Main Star~Goals for 2019

For one of the Main Stars we had to write 3 goals for this year. They can be outside of the classroom or in. I chose to do……..

Goal 1, inside of school~Achieve a stanine 8/9 in my maths test in the PAT stanine test. I would like to do this as at the start of year test I only got a stanine 7 and I would like to make it a little higher. I can do this by working on areas from math textbooks and using maths buddy.

Goal 2, outside of school~ Hold dish for 1 minutes and 30 seconds straight to help with strength and core in gymnastics and dance. I can do this by holding dish everyday for 15 seconds then gradually holding a little bit longer.

Goal  3, inside of school~Read 50 books this year, school library or Grey District library. I already read heaps so I just have to keep going, I have already read 3 books so far this year. I can record these by doing blog posts or using a presentation in google drive.

Pre Reading of the "Mine's afire"

For literacy, we are reading "The Mines Afire!" which is a New Zealand story of how the Brunner Mine had its disaster. We haven't started reading the book, but have looked at the historical notes at the back of the book. This presentation has questions which we answered using the facts in the notes.
