Wearable Arts 2019

Last night was the Wearable Arts evening. I was in a group with Katelynn (our model) and Angelina. The theme for Wearable Arts was the West Coast, with a future focus. My group's idea was a fantail and we made an amazing costume that we presented last night, accompanied by a speech. We didn't win any prizes but we were very proud of what we have achieved in the past term. There was couple changes to our speech but this was mainly what it was before:

Wearable Arts Speech 2019

This year the theme for Wearable Arts was flavours of the West Coast with a future focus. We had many different ideas and designs like Ferns, Matariki and beaches but in the end we decided to create an outfit based on Fantails. For our outfit we decided on a simple top and skirt made out of old brown bed sheets. Then we decided to make a brown and white tail, and feathers around the top to respect the fantail. We made the tail out of paper that we painted and stuck onto cardboard. To stick the tail on the outfit we used pieces of velcro and stuck them onto a velcro belt we made. We tried to make the tail exactly like a fantail’s real tail. The feathers around the top we made out of paper that we cut lots of small cuts in. We had about 80 feathers and we painted about half brown. To stick the feathers onto the top we used hot glue. For the wings we got more of the brown bed sheet material and cut sets of it out then tied them onto Katelynn’s arm’s so they would for and wave around just like a fantail’s wings flow in the wind.

Our inspiration for this outfit was mainly the fantail’s tail, wings and their feathers. We think Fantails are apart of the West Coast because the are practically everywhere and their maori name is Piwakawaka, and we know that Te Reo Maori is very important to Grey Main School, which is on the West Coast. We found the hardest part of making this outfit was sewing everything together. We spent most of our time trying to use the sewing machine but it didn’t work so we just handsewed it. Surprisingly the easiest part was the tail and feathers on the top, even though we thought that would have been the hardest part.
