SLJ Week 1 Activity 12 2020

In the war-torn country of Syria in 2015, Yusra Mardini, her family and many other refugees fled from their destroyed home country. Yusra Mardini was with her sister and 18 other refugees in a lifeboat, and 15 minutes into their journey, the motor broke down. Yusra (being a professional swimmer) and her sister jumped into the water and towed their boat for over 3 hours! She was determined to not let those refugees, her sister and herself drown; and thanks to her courage and perseverance, she succeeded. Unbelievably, she even went to the Rio Olympics in 2016 and competed. She was in the first ever refugee team for the Olympics. She currently lives in Berlin and is training for the Tokyo Olympics this year.

  1. Kia ora Kyra,

Thank you for sharing your retelling of Yusra Mardini. Can you imagine how challenging it would be to escape your country like this? I like swimming but there’s no way I could handle three hours in open water. What do you think would have been the hardest part of her journey?

I think I will try to keep an eye out for Yusra in the Olympics this year. How cool would it be if she won some medals?

Another excellent blog post Kyra, thank you for sharing with us :)
